Kenya
This Kenyan delivers exactly the wildly vivid black-berry notes the origin is known for, but it is surprisingly sweet alongside them. That is why it appealed to us most of all the samples we tasted: we found a genuinely complex cup in it. As in so many growing areas in Africa, processing here is central — around 1,800 smallholders belong to the Kainamui station. Once the coffee arrives at the station it ferments overnight, and depulping and drying begin the next day. The “AA” grade is the highest in Kenya, awarded on the size and the quality of the beans. · Kirinyaga

About this lot
In Kenya, AA refers to bean size rather than to quality — but at Kainamui the two go together. Dense, redcurrant acidity that holds up as espresso too, if you grind fine enough.
We buy small lots and roast them in batches we can taste all the way through. Every bag carries its roast date — not a best-before, because coffee does not spoil, it only loses its best.
